The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office issued a report, made public on Thursday, June 13, 2013, stating that there will no State criminal charges for the death of Brandon Johnson at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex in October 2012. Mr. Johnson died at the Complex after being a patient there for only three days, at some point suffering a broken neck, which resulted in the blood clots that caused his death. According to Assistant District Attorney Mark Williams, who wrote the report following an open-court John Doe investigation, staff at the Complex failed to adequately investigate Mr. Johnson’s claims of paralysis, however, the conduct was not criminal because there was no intent to harm Mr. Johnson. The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin has agreed to review the case to determine any federal involvement for potential claims or criminal penalties.
