The Second Day of the Criminal Trial for Murder Darius Simmons

Posted on

There may be comparisons between the shooting of Darius Simmons by John H. Spooner to the shooting of Travon Martin by George Zimmerman, because both shootings involved criminal profiling and may have been racially motivated. While the George Zimmerman trial has concluded, the trial of Mr. Spooner continued into its second day on July 16, 2013.

The second day of the criminal trial for John H. Spooner, who shot and killed 13-year-old Darius Simmons on May 31, 2012, saw video played for the jury which shows Mr. Spooner shooting Darius. The Milwaukee Police Department obtained the video from a surveillance camera at Mr. Spooner’s home. The video shows Darius bringing in garbage cans from the curb when Mr. Spooner exits his residence with a gun, confronts Darius and then shoots him. Darius’ mother, Patricia Larry, testified that she witnessed the shooting from her front door. According to Ms. Larry, Mr. Spooner demanded that Darius return guns that Mr. Spooner incorrectly believed that Darius had stolen. When Darius said that he did not know what Mr. Spooner was talking about, Mr. Spooner fatally shot him. The trial of Mr. Spooner continues today.
