On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed a bill passed by the legislature that will increase the maximum speed limit in the state from 65 mph to 70 mph. Under the new law, the speed limit can be raised only on four-lane roads that have entrance and exit ramps. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (“DOT”), the plan is to raise the speed limit to 70 mph on the interstate freeway system, as well as parts of U.S. Highways 51, 53 and 141. Prior to passage of the bill, Wisconsin was the only state in the country that had a maximum 65 mph speed limit. Studies done by the DOT have shown that the average speed on many Wisconsin highways is already above 70 mph. The DOT expects to have the new speed limit signs up in time for tourist season this summer.
